A Perfect Family Activity

As a family, we’ve always enjoyed spending time together, but we were looking for something new, something that would be both fun and meaningful for all of us. That’s when we discovered Basketry Traditions, and it turned out to be exactly what we were looking for. The chance to learn something creative, hands-on, and rooted in tradition felt like the perfect way to bond and share a unique experience together.

We signed up for a family-friendly basket weaving course, and from the very first moment, we felt welcomed. The instructors at Basketry Traditions were so warm and patient, making sure that each of us, no matter our age or experience level, felt comfortable and included. They explained that basketry isn’t just about making something to take home—it’s about connecting with each other and with the natural materials we were working with. From the start, it was clear that this wasn’t just a craft class; it was an opportunity to experience something deeper.

The materials we used were all natural—willow, reed, and grasses—each with its own unique texture and character. Our instructor took the time to explain where the materials came from, how they were harvested sustainably, and how they had been used in different cultures for centuries. It was a lovely way to introduce our kids to the idea of working with natural, sustainable materials and how human creativity has always been intertwined with the world around us.

The weaving itself was surprisingly easy to pick up. Even our younger children (ages 7 and 9) were able to get involved, with guidance and support from the instructor. There was something incredibly special about watching all of us, from the oldest to the youngest, working side by side to create something beautiful. The weaving process required focus, patience, and teamwork, which brought us closer together in ways that felt both rewarding and relaxing.

As we sat around the table, weaving in and out, there was a calmness that came over the group. We were so focused on the task at hand that we found ourselves laughing, sharing stories, and enjoying each other’s company in a way we hadn’t done in a while. The process of making something with our hands—something tangible that we could take home and be proud of—felt truly fulfilling. Plus, the rhythm of weaving had a way of slowing down time, which allowed us to be fully present in the moment, without distractions.

For our kids, the experience was both fun and educational. They loved choosing the colors and patterns for their baskets and took great pride in their creations. As a parent, it was incredible to see them so engaged and immersed in a creative project, especially one that didn’t involve a screen. There’s something about working with your hands—feeling the materials and watching them take shape—that is so rewarding and so different from the instant gratification of digital activities. They even asked if we could do more basket weaving at home!

At the end of the course, we all left with our own handwoven baskets—simple yet beautiful creations that would be useful in so many ways. The kids proudly displayed theirs in their rooms, and I use mine to hold fresh flowers on the kitchen table. Every time I see it, I’m reminded of the special time we spent together, learning a craft that connects us to nature and to each other.

The best part of this experience was that it wasn’t just about the final product. It was about the time spent together, the conversations shared, and the memories we created as a family. Basketry Traditions gave us the chance to slow down, disconnect from the busyness of daily life, and immerse ourselves in something creative and meaningful. And in a world that’s constantly moving faster, it was exactly what we needed.

If you’re looking for a way to spend quality time with your family—one that encourages creativity, mindfulness, and learning together—I can’t recommend Basketry Traditions enough. It’s more than just a craft; it’s an experience that fosters connection, patience, and shared joy. Whether you’re crafting a basket for practical use or simply as a keepsake, the time you spend weaving together will create lasting memories for years to come.

We’ll definitely be back for more courses in the future—who knows what other family traditions we’ll create along the way!
